First trip of the 2010 year and the weather was rough, rain, blowing, high waves. Saturday was brutal, 3 to 5's with some 6 footers thrown in, fished for awhile in the AM, hunted the south and east side of Kelleys finally found good solid marks late afternoon east of Kelleys Island shoal and picked a few. Started Sunday where we left off yesterday and had to find them again, fish really turned on late morning, we had a blast. Trouble with the camcorder (operator error) or I would have more film but it was a great time. Glad we stayed on Kelleys both Friday and Saturday, close to the fish and much easier. One of the things I love about fishing is every day is a new day. I moved my boat from Marblehead OH to Vermilion OH where I'll spend most of my time on or near the Sand bar which runs from a few miles off of Vermilion up to the Canadian line.

I stopped on good marks about 7 miles north of the Vermilion river, with a good chop on the water. Set started as a large dipsy off the starboard stern, #1 setting, 50 back confusion stinger. Second rod off the Port side was one of my favorites, an 800 Reef Runner flatlined 200 back. Both lures were close to the 30-35 feet down marks.

Dipsy took the first and largest fish within 5 minutes of trolling. Fish 2 & 3 came on the same rod so I pulled the RR and set a 40 jet, with a confusion stinger 75 back and it took 2 of the next 3 walleye. Six fish in less than two hours and all I really planned to do was move my boat, lol.

I'll be night fishing off Vermilion this fall so contact me if you want to go.

Sometimes the most beautiful things are in our own backyard. In one of Dean's posts on the Denied website, Dean writes "If you only go fishing to catch fish you are missing so much." The quote may not be exact but I'm sure you get the meaning. If you don't, take a child with you on your next fishing trip, watch as he/she enjoys the bait fish, thrills as a gull screeches down to pick up a discarded bait, or stares intently at the horizon and you can only imagine what they are thinking. There is so much more to fishing than just catching fish.

BTW the picture is Long Point, Kelleys Island, Lake Erie, just before sundown.

I hope you get razzed by your friends when you have your first crush on a girl, and when you talk back to your mother that you learn what Ivory soap tastes like.

May you skin your knee climbing a mountain, burn your hand on the stove and stick your tongue on a frozen flag pole. I hope you get sick when someone blows cigar smoke in your face. I don't care if you try beer once, but I hope you don't like it. And if a friend offers you dope or a joint, I hope you realize he is not your friend.

I sure hope you make time to sit on a porch with your grandpa and go fishing with your uncle. May you feel sorrow at a funeral and the joy of holidays. I hope your mother punishes you when you throw a baseball through a neighbor's window and that she hugs you and kisses you at Christmas time when you give her a plaster of Paris mold ofyour hand.

These things I wish for you - tough times and disappointment, hard work and happiness.

Saturday was a beautiful day on Lake Erie, fishing with Dewey on the left and Rob on the right, these are just a few of the three tickets we pulled off of Vermilion. We started off the NE side of Kelleys close to the old "C" can picking a 25" walleye within the first 5 minutes of fishing. Off to a great start but then a dry spell. Worked east until we hit the mother load.

We caught this 24" walleye off Rattlesnake island, very healthy fish but the dorsal fin was missing, and the bruises on both sides indicate it had been caught in a net, perhaps a perch net (?) or a larger Canadian net and escaped. Could have taken more pictures but these pretty much tell the story. Any thoughts?

I really enjoy late afternoon/evening charters, the sun is casting long shadows, the lake normally lays down, very little boat traffic, most fishermen have gone home and we often have the lake to ourselves. Life is good.

One of my favorite spots at sun down is the east side of Kelleys Islands looking west through the tip of Long Point. I'll try and get a photo next trip, its absolutely beautiful. Or better yet treat yourself, take an evening fishing charter and enjoy the view first hand while fishing.

Striper Fishing, York Maine

I recently had the opportunity to fish for stripers with Captain Walter Woods of York Maine along with my grandson Daniel and son-in-law John. This is a 25" striper Danny caught and released off Long Sands Beach, York Maine. What a great time we had chasing stripers, catching mackerel and even a cod fish. Captain Walter has been fishing this area since he was a kid and knows the waters well, is a class guy and really made a fun day for us, I can't say enough about him he is everything you want in a captain and more. I'm looking forward to fishing with him again soon.

This is what it looks like from shore, the breakwall is about 7 feet high, today some of the waves were over the top of the walkway, high enough to drench me from head to toe when I got caught by one, but hey, it's all good.

In spite of 48 degree weather today just south of us there are still ice flows on Lake Erie, these are about a mile off of Vermilion, OH on 3-14-09.

I believe the strongest and easiest knot to tie for 99% of fishing, is the Palomor Knot. My video will show how to it tie. Practice a few times and you'll be able to tie this knot with your eyes closed.

Dropped anchor 5:30 PM, 31/17 lines, three guys pulled 45-50 perch, in two hours, avg size 8", beautiful evening to be out, clear sky, half moon, high sixty degrees, ya gotta love fall. Fish weighed just under 20 lb.
